Snag Boat Bend is a part of Finley Wildlife Refuge, but on the east side of the Willamette River. It evidently was added tot he refuge in 2000, but we had never been aware of it until we drove by the sign on Peoria Road early in the summer. On our way back from Eugene on Tuesday we drove on Peoria Road and when we passed the sign we turned around and went back to visit.
The refuge has a viewing area open year round in a wetlands area and some trails through the wetlands during the dry season. We took one of the trails and came to Lake Creek where we saw several birds including a Great Blue Heron. We also tasted some blackberries. It was a pretty area and will have an abundance of birds in the summer so we plan to return in the future.
After our hike we drove a little further to Peoria Park where we stopped and had a late picnic lunch before returning home.
